Description

Shri Devikoop Bhadrakali Temple, also known as Shri Devi Koop, is among the most revered spiritual stops in Kurukshetra. Dedicated to Maa Bhadrakali, one of the eight forms of Goddess Kali, it is counted among the 51 Shakti Peeths of India and draws devotees from all over the country throughout the year.

Why Visit Shri Bhadrakali Temple

A sacred Shakti Peeth. Believed to be the place where the right ankle of Goddess Sati fell, remembered here through a white marble lotus inside the temple.
A Mahabharata connection. The Pandavas are said to have prayed here, with Lord Krishna, before the Kurukshetra war.
Krishna and Balarama’s mundan. Tradition holds that the hair-cutting ceremony of Lord Krishna and Balarama took place at this temple, which is why families still come here for mundan sanskar.
The tradition of offering horses. After their victory, the Pandavas are believed to have returned and offered horses to the Goddess. Even today, devotees offer terracotta and metal horses once their wishes are fulfilled.
The sacred Devi Koop. The temple takes its name from the holy well (koop), and shrines of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Saraswati and Gayatri Devi can also be visited nearby.

Legend and Beliefs

According to the Shakti Peeth tradition, when Lord Shiva carried the body of Goddess Sati across the universe in grief, parts of her body fell at different places, each becoming a Shakti Peeth. At Kurukshetra, her ankle is believed to have fallen, and the Goddess is worshipped here as Maa Bhadrakali. Devotees believe that praying here, especially on a Saturday, brings blessings and fulfils heartfelt wishes.
